Chapter 10

That same night . . .

It was nearly lights out when the women made their way back to the cellblock. A cluster of people stood outside the cell waiting for them.

Katrina separated herself from the group and let loose with a wicked smile before walking backward down the opposite end of the hall, her eyes and that sickly grin riveted on Lorna the entire way.

Then she stopped and waited.

Lorna’s feet froze and her stomach dropped. “Oh, shit.” She’d seen that look before and in an instant she realized she’d made a grave error in pushing Katrina as far as she had today.

Kellie’s head snapped sideways and her eyes widened a little at the fearful tone of her friend’s voice. “What?”

Lorna clinched her teeth together, dread swirling in her belly. “I don’t know.”

A cluster of guards was waiting outside their cell and the women moved forward slowly, their anxiety building with every grudging step.

“There you are,” Roscoe said. He rapped his clipboard with thick knuckles. “I thought I was going to get to sic the dogs on you, Mally.”

He sounded so disappointed that he’d missed that opportunity that the tiny hairs on the back of Kellie’s neck lifted in outrage.

Roscoe tugged up his sagging pants with one hand. “You both just made it before lights out.”

Lorna smiled politely at the guard. “I thought you were off shift, fat ass. But I’m flattered that you came back to see me.”

Kellie rolled her eyes. Not again.

Roscoe surged forward, pushing his face no more than an inch in front of Lorna, who didn’t even flinch. “I don’t think you’ll be flattered long.”

Foul air tickled her mouth and cheeks and Lorna coughed at the nasty smell of his breath.

With a look of supreme satisfaction on his face, Roscoe backed up a step. But his smile faltered when Lorna dismissed him with a look of utter disgust.

Lorna had the sudden urge to take Kellie’s hand, but didn’t dare.

Still, she couldn’t help but move a little closer to her, so close that their shoulders were touching.

Lorna struggled to stay calm. Unlike the maximum security wing, where guards never worked alone, in the medium security wing that was the norm. Two guards together weren’t unusual, if the task called for it, but three guards together outside a prisoner’s cell meant trouble. And then there was Katrina and her posse, who were still brazenly watching them from the end of the hall.

Kellie let out a deep sigh of relief that Lorna and Roscoe had apparently retreated into neutral corners. At least for now. Unable to keep the worry from her voice, she gazed questioningly at Chul and Elaine. “What’s up, guys?”

Chul nudged Roscoe who handed over his clipboard. Frowning, the Asian man ran his finger down a list of cells and names. “I know it’s late, but we’re reassigning you tonight.” He passed the board back to Roscoe.

Lorna felt as though she’d been socked in the chest as the air in her lungs burst out in a rush.

Clearly uncomfortable, Elaine managed a sympathetic look.
